Uttar Pradesh (UP) alone accounts for 20 percent of India's poor. UP performs poorly on critical indicators of health, nutrition, education, and women's empowerment.
UP-India-World Indicators
- While the average Maternal Mortality Rate in India is 212, in UP it is 62.73 percent higher at 345 per 100,000 live births (SRS 2011).
- The average Infant Mortality Rate in India is 44 whereas in UP, it is 63 per 1,000 live births (AHS 2010-2011).
- The percentage of women availing institutional delivery is 62.09%, while only 26.3% avail Ante Natal Care check-ups in UP (NFSH III).
- Only 17% of women practice exclusive breastfeeding for six months (AHS 2010-2011).
The high proportion of the population belonging to the socially and economically depressed sections in UP has profound implications for the status of human development. Furthermore, UP has been lagging in the mobilisation of rural poor. State and self-help promoting institutions have very little outreach to the poorest of the poor, especially those from marginalised communities.
Poverty is rampant in Uttar Pradesh
- 29.43% of the population lives below the poverty line
- The total number of poor are 73.79 million
- The number of multidimensional poor are 126.9 million
- The prevalence of calorie undernutrition is 14.5%
- The prevalence of underweight children under five years is 42.3%
